How to Take Accurate Anthropometric Measurements
An orthopedic brace is only as effective as its physical fit. A brace that is too loose will migrate down during movement, while a brace that is too tight can cause venous pooling and skin irritation. Follow the Tanaka brothers' clinical protocols below using a flexible measuring tape.
Knee Braces & Hinged Orthoses
Stand upright with your knee slightly bent (approx. 15°). Measure thigh circumference exactly 15 cm (6 inches) above the center of your kneecap (patella).
| Size | Metric Circumference | Imperial (Inches) | Recommended Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (S) | 32 cm – 37 cm | 12.5" – 14.5" | QuadForce / GraduKnit / Biaxial |
| Medium (M) | 38 cm – 43 cm | 15.0" – 17.0" | QuadForce / GraduKnit / Biaxial |
| Large (L) | 44 cm – 49 cm | 17.5" – 19.5" | QuadForce / GraduKnit / Biaxial |
| X-Large (XL) | 50 cm – 56 cm | 20.0" – 22.0" | QuadForce / GraduKnit / Biaxial |
Lumbar Decompression Back Belts
CRITICAL: Do NOT use your pant waist size. Measure with a tape directly across your belly button (navel level) while standing relaxed.
| Size | Abdominal Circumference | Fits Waist (Pant Reference) |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 65 cm – 80 cm | 25" – 31" |
| Medium | 80 cm – 95 cm | 31" – 37" |
| Large | 95 cm – 110 cm | 37" – 43" |
| X-Large | 110 cm – 125 cm | 43" – 49" |
| XX-Large | 125 cm – 140 cm | 49" – 55" |
Carpal Tunnel Wrist Splints
Measure around the boney wrist crease:
- S/M: 13 cm – 18 cm (5.1" – 7.1")
- L/XL: 19 cm – 24 cm (7.5" – 9.5")
Posture Correctors & Harvester
Measure chest circumference directly under armpits:
- S/M: 70 cm – 90 cm (27.5" – 35.5")
- L/XL: 90 cm – 115 cm (35.5" – 45.0")
What if You Fall Between Two Sizes?
If your measurement is on the border: choose the smaller size if you require firmer athletic compression during sport; choose the larger size if you have acute post-injury edema or sensitive circulation.
